By and large, the acceptance and widespread use of CBD for holistic wellness is still in its infancy. In fact, scientists are still trying to develop a "one size fits all" model for consuming the compound. While dialing in the perfect CBD Tincture amount, determining how much Body Lotion or Face Cream to apply, how many Soft Chews to eat, or how much CBD E-Liquid to vape may seem confusing at first, the tried and true method of trial & erroris the most surefire way to gauge those boundaries.
Due to the lack of knowledge surrounding optimal dosage of CBD, let this article serve as an informational guide - a starting point of reference. Please understand, however, this is not to be confused to with medical advice. When it comes to cannabinoids and CBD dosing, there is one universal truth to keep in mind:
There are countless other variables to consider that makes the development of a universal dosage nearly impossible. Variables such as weight, diet, metabolism, genetics, environment, product consistency, method of delivery, and several other factors all make it nearly impossible to develop a see-all, end-all solution towards dosing. Like supplements, medication, and even the food we consume, everybody is different and therefore processes things different from others. Therefore, the act of experimenting with CBD dosages leans more towards the "do what works for you" model. Nevertheless, this article will highlight some tips and tricks to CBD dosing, particularly focusing on CBD Tincture Dosing.
Don't worry, we'll highlight tips and tricks to dosing our other products in due time.
CBD Tinctures are one of the most popular delivery methods; and who can argue? Placing a few drops under the tongue and its effective are felt within minutes? Yes please!
Tinctures, however, are arguable one of the most challenging products to dose. There is, however, light at the end of the tunnel; and it requires some knowledge of yourself and some basic math skills. Let's jump in!
Let's start with our Orange Tincture for this example - it is offered in a 30ml bottle and each full dose of the oil equates to 1ml. To break this down further:
This is simple math - take the total CBD potency and divide by the size of the bottle. In this case, our 500mg Orange Tincture, offered in a 30ml bottle, contains approximately 16.667mg of CBD in a 1ml dose.
Here, we assume that a single drop of CBD-infused Tincture would equate to 35 drops when converting to a 1ml dose. Therefore , take your CBD potency per 1ml dose and divide it by 35. The result of a single frop of Tincture contained in a 30ml bottle of Orange Tincture at 500mg CBD strength is approximately 0.476mg.
Now that you know the potency of a single drop of your Tincture, the next goal is to determine how many drops you'd need to experience relief. This is also a simple math equation - take the desired CBD dose of the product and divide it by the amount of CBD per drop you made in previous calculations.
The unknown variable, however, is determining what CBD dosage you'd require to effectively solve this problem. This leads us into our next point: How would you determine the proper dosage to relieve your ailment?
As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are many factors that ultimately affect the size of the dosage that will work for you. Setting the ailment and intensity of which aside, other factors include:
We won't go into exhaustive detail about the list above; but we will highlight some notes to consider about three of these components and how it can possibly skew information during your dosing journey.
We'll still provide general guidelines based on weight, however, keep in mind that your weight may change for a number of reasons, therefore, your dosing may fluctuate. For example, if you lose weight due to a decrease in the intensity of mental disorder (i.e.: anxiety, depression, psychosis), the CBD dosage tends to decrease over time. In contrast, if you gain weight due to appetite increase or the elimination of nauseating feelings, CBD dosage increases.
While we cannot offer medical advice, this ties directly in the see what works for you model All it takes is a notebook to record your findings to truly pinpoint your preferred dose.
Unlike weight, metabolism does not fluctuate as easily. Unless there is a drastic alteration in lifestyle (i.e.: transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one), metabolism changes slowly. In addition, there is a not a quantifiable number to metabolism. Can one really quantify how long it takes to digest food?
It is worth noting that tolerance to CBD has an asterisk. While there is a such thing as tolerance to CBD, exceptions to this fact come down to how the CBD is extracted. When it comes to consuming CBD, particularly that of Envy CBD, our extraction process is Full Plant Extract, meaning during extraction, we retain the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant matter from the hemp plant. During this process, we also apply a proprietary filtration process that effectively filters out the THC WITHOUT sacrificing its plant matter from the hemp.
The result is a synthesized hemp extract that contains nearly all beneficial aspects of the plant. The inclusion of these aspects does now allow a tolerance build-up, as virtually every batch is different in minuscule ways - and thus, impossible for the body to build a tolerance against it.
Remember the math section above? Using this dosing guide based on weight, you now have a starting point to calculate adequate dosing of CBD!
The author of this article, we'll call him "Tim," was generous enough to share his pre-existing condition and how the inclusion of CBD into his wellness routine showed improvement in managing it.
Typically, American children are examined by their respective Pediatrician for early signs of spinal curvature. If severe enough, treatment is prescribed to effectively minimize harm experienced later in life. This aspect of health and wellness was overlooked by Tim's Pediatrician and was dismissed as "growing pains."
Formally diagnosed with Cogenital Scoliosis at the age of 18, Tim's primary Physician, Neurosurgeon, Sports Medicine Doctor, and Physical Therapist conducted X-Rays and MRI Cat scans independently. Imagine four X-ray tests and four MRIs to conclude the same thing: A 23-degree curvature of the thoracic spine and a 49-degree curvature of the lumbar spine in the opposite direction; both resulting in a constant, dull pain measuring out to an 8 out of 10.
Seeing that Tim now has the access and attention of these healthcare professionals, here is the list of what worked and what did not:
Amidst the different treatment options Tim has at his disposal, we think it's worth highlighting the value in that the options that tended to work with minimal consequences leaned more towards the holistic approach to wellness: bouldering, physical therapy, etc.
Tim's introduction to CBD came at a time when he had a brief stint in the legal cannabis industry where his knowledge of the plant only blossomed. Now, in conjunction with a myriad of treatment options at the helm, the pain effectively experienced every minute of every day has subsided rather significantly. The main point of this entire case study only highlights the value in experimenting with your body to figure out what works for you.
While it is generally accepted that CBD's side effects are significantly less intense than other drugs, it's best to be aware of them.
In 2017, researchers analyzed a collection of relevant animal studies and clinical data to provide a thorough update on the safety and potential side effects of CBD. Both physiological and psychological parameters like body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate were not found to be negatively impacted, and in some cases, responded positively to cannabidiol.
Despite the relatively favorable outcome of the studies, CBD's side effects to include fatigue, diarrhea, and changes in weight, appetite, or both. Again, highlighting the fac that these side effects are generally experienced with all drugs and relative to others, cannabidiol holds a milder set of them in terms of intensity.
Given the side effects, can one overdose on CBD to achieve more intense side effects? Even death?
In short, the answer is no, you cannot overdose on CBD.
Using the same study above, the volunteers that participated in the chronic administration of CBD for months at a time were given up to 1500mg of CBD daily. An entire bottle of Envy CBD at the highest concentration is 1000MG per ML, to which most of our community finds that the bottle can last at least a month of consistent, daily use. To put this into context, consuming 1500mg of CBD is to consume one and a half bottles of our 1000mg Tinctures every day to achieve the same effect as the study participants.
Second, even if one does achieve overdosing effects of cannabidiol, the possibility of experiencing death from the compound is slim-to-none. According to the National Cancer Institute, "cannabinoid receptors, unlike opiod receptors, are not located in the brain stem [which effectively controls] respiration [resulting in the inability to experience] lethal overdoses from cannabis and cannabinoids."
Scientifically, it is not possible to overdose from CBD. Despite the mild side effects, even if a person was willing to consume large amounts of the compound, another aspect prevents one from truly overdosing - which is called bioavailability. Bioavailability is the process in which the human body processes compounds. When it comes to CBD oil, our bioavailability averages only 30%; so regardless of how much one consumes, only 30% of it will be metabolized, further proving the inability to experience overdose.
We'll let you in on a secret: to find the right dosage for your situation, we highly recommend starting small. Remember, the least amount of medicine you need to feel relief, the better.
Experiment with a certain dosage for three days to give your body time to react to the medication. Adjust the dosage up or down accordingly for the next three-day period. If you feel any discomfort from your dosage, scale it back down to a comfortable level and restart your process. Good luck everyone!
