Envy CBD
Introducing a revolutionized holistic lifestyle through responsible use of Full Spectrum CBD.

If we had a nickel for every time our office dog was startled by someone stopping by to deliver a package, we'd be rich!  Are your pets afraid of loud noises?  Noise phobias in pets are a common problem that many pet owners are concerned about.  Pets that are afraid of loud noise may show signs of distress that range from mild to severe and can include:

  • Whining or vocalizing
  • Drooling
  • Shaking
  • Seeking shelter or fleeing
  • Destructive behavior such as chewing furniture
  • Urinating or defecating

Clearly, all of these distress signs are fair reasons to be concerned.  After all, you are likely to be the one to experience this happen!

With CBD popularity continuing to soar, it is more important than ever to find a brand you can trust to not just deliver your daily dose of relief, but also, a more-natural alternative for your furry friends.

We recently released our all-new CBD Pets collection featuring our Pet Tincture and Dog Treats, both designed to help your pet stay stronger for longer.  In this case, we'll be exploring 5 ways to help your pet cope with a phobia for noise!

what is cbd and why are pet owners looking to it for help?

Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is the most-abundant cannabinoid found in hemp.  Unlike it's psychoactive counterpart, THC, which is abundantly found in cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive.  Due to the lack of psychoactivity, the majority of Americans that religiously use its infused products have countless anecdotal evidence supporting its therapeutic uses for both humans and pets alike!

Despite the popularity of CBD in humans and the interest of pet owners to now look towards the compound in providing relief for their pets, it is important to understand that Veterinarians are not yet legally allowed to prescribe, let alone, recommend CBD as a treatment option for pets. As it stands, there is only one product that is approved by the FDA, and its used to treat seizures in humans, not our furry friends.

Regardless of the legality behind it, thousands have already begun to incorporate CBD into their pets' self-care routine. In fact, back in October of 2019, the Los Angeles Times reported that pet owners who use CBD products to treat their ailing pets are echoing the positive results. The motivation for doing so is the same too; pharmaceuticals either have undesirable side effects or don't work.

understanding noise phobia in pets

Given the list of potential distress signals that your pet may experience when startled by a loud noise, it is important to understand the underlying issue that causes such reactions.  While some pets seem to only be triggered by specific noises, such as thunderstorms, fireworks, nearby gunshots, motorcycles, or doorbells, other pets might react from a wide variety of noises that might otherwise trigger a panic-like state.

The causes for this behavior in pets are not 100% understood; but what we do know is that anxiety-related behaviors such as separation anxiety, trigger-induced panic, and noise phobias all have a high correlation.  Research indicates that a pet suffering from one of these conditions is likely to have one of the others.  And, research also suggests that this condition can be a learned response or the product of brain imbalances similar to some anxiety disorders in humans.

If your pet doesn't take too kindly to loud noises, here are 5 things you can do to help:

1. anticipate the trigger

One of the most powerful ways to help your pets cope with fear of noises it to learn precisely the kinds of sounds that make it anxious and try to anticipate them.  For example, if fireworks are popping off for New Years or the 4th of July, and your dog loses it, you know you may need to provide extra support.  If your dog starts barking incessantly when the doorbell rings, keeping an eye on when to expect packages would be a wise move.

Realistically, it is not always possible to know when a motorcycle comes speeding down your street, or when you're expecting the cable technician to arrive between the hours of 8am and 7pm.  You can, however, predict a potentially triggering situation, giving your the advantage of managing the environment to make sure your pet will feel safe in the event an anxiety or panic-induced attack flares up from the noise phobia.

2. PROVIDE SHELTER

Many pets with a chronic fear of noise experience a significantly less-intense reaction from it by having a place to retreat when triggered.  One such solution to providing shelter is an animal crate, particularly, a hard-sided one (or a wire crate with a blanket laid over it).

Although it may seem alarming to see your furry friends run to the crate to hide, it is frankly one of the best responses to loud noises.  This means your pet is doing what it needs to do to calm down on its own.  Besides, it sure beats tearing up the furniture or leaving a smelly surprise on the carpet.

3. CALM YOURSELF DOWN

Just as we mentioned above, it may seem alarming to see your pets freak out when a triggering event is happening' and it's traumatic to have to helplessly watch such distress.  It is critical that you work to bring your own emotional reaction to one of calm and confidence.  Your pets are looking to you for signals and your concern is very likely to be understood depending on how YOU handle the situation.

While it is tempting to coddle your pet, the instinct to comfort can be easily overdone.  Your behavior can be internalized as a form of reward for the anxious behavior, sending your pet the signal that acting out is appropriate.  While certainly a few pets for reassuring and a calm tone is in order, try your best to ignore the behavior as long as your pet is not in danger (such as chewing up electrical cords or digging at the drywall in a desperate escape attempt).

4. REDIRECT YOUR PET'S ATTENTION

Sometimes, in particularly mild to moderate cases of noise phobia, you can distract your pet with something it really loves such as some extra special treats, a game of tug or fetch, or running through some of its favorite tricks.

If you are able to capture your pet's attention and get its mind on something else, all the while, rewarding it for behavior other than fear, then this is the ideal situation.  Not only are you helping your dog feel better in the moment, you are also "reprogramming" the emotional response during the noise itself.

In fact, many professional animal trainers will use recordings of noises set at a very low volume at first with this kind of redirection training.  Over time the volume is turned up, but the redirection work goes on with plenty of reward.  This can desensitize your pet in relationship to a specific noise trigger, although it often takes months to fully remove the response response, and even then it can come back unexpectedly.

5. HAVE YOUR PET TRY CBD

At the very fundamental level, noise phobias in pets are related to anxiety around a trigger.  One such natural alternative thousands of pet owners are looking to is CBD's inherent ability to counter feelings of anxiety.  CBD oil may help complement behavior training for pets with phobias.  Research on people has show that not only does CBD seem to reduce anxiety by working directly with the central nervous system, but it also seems to have a dampening effect on learned fear, such as what we see with many phobias.

Many pet owners and trainers alike have found that a few drops of a Pet Tincture within an hour of triggering situations can be especially helpful in reducing the severity of a panic response.  Others may prefer to use CBD oil as a safe daily addition for overall wellness given the various potential health benefits of this natural product and have noticed their pets seem less anxious in general.

THE ENVY CBD COMMITTMENT

The fact of the matter is this: the market for CBD is skyrocketing. With the industry projected to reach $20 billion by 2024 and more and more research demonstrates greater efficacy behind it, this high demand can translate into an environment that's ripe for scandal.

Envy CBD is committed to providing only the finest Full Spectrum CBD products for both humans and pets alike. Our commitment to quality looks like this:

I. Organic, USA-Grown Hemp

Based in Colorado, Minnesota, and Oregon, our farms use organic, pesticide-free practices, and natural sunlight to grow our beautiful, healthy, and massive hemp plants.

II. Batch Lab Testing

Many CBD companies out there don't provide third party lab tests on their products. If you encounter this, it is a big red flag. As of right now, there isn't formal regulation that supervises the quality of CBD oil. Responsible companies such as Envy CBD have taken it upon ourselves to stand by our products and provide third party label tests.

III. Our Certifications Matter

It's only a matter of time before the FDA regulates CBD. When that happens, most companies would be removed from the market due to non-compliant facilities. Luckily, Envy CBD has already gone through the compliance hoops to not only future-proof ourselves, but to provide the absolute best quality products for you and your pets. Our certifications include:
